Motorcycle Promotional Materials

I am passionate about motorcycle racing and decided to create content for that genre. I used photoshop to produce an advertisement for the BMW S1000RR which is a race replica supersport motorcycle. The artifact was developed with both my personal experience with the genre as well as online research of comparable works. This demonstrated a critical evaluation of genre within a visual medium. To successfully complete this assignment, I had to leverage existing beliefs and knowledge while integrating them with new information and ideas from research of comparable works.

My personal passion for motorcycles gave me insight into the mind of a hobbyist racer as well as a street rider. I have also worked professionally in the motorcycle environment as a ride coach for the California Superbike School. This background informs research and makes a quick job of critical analysis. By operating in the motorcycling world since my youth, it is easy to select effective rhetorical strategies.

This background knowledge doesn’t allow me to skip research and critical analysis though. It just makes my research and critical analysis more effective because I already have the basics in mind before deciding the direction of the promotional materials and visual media. Blending my knowledge into the final product takes some consideration because I don’t want to get carried away and simply produce what I find interesting or enjoyable.

I followed the genre conventions of focusing on an action product placement, including a fast complimentary item such as an aircraft or an animal (in this case, a cheetah), and an adventurous background. These design choices are documented in my comparison images which were compiled in the research phase of the project.
